4 Essential Facts About the Bathukamma Ritual

Why Use Many Flowers In Bathukamma?

The use of seasonal flowers is the most prominent aspect of Bathukamma. The flowers are made to look like a temple tower (gopuram) with a turmeric idol of Gauri placed on the top.

Bathukamma Connection to Nature

1. Ecological Balance:

Bathukamma festival occurs at the end of the monsoon season when the flora of the Telangana region is at its best, with the blooming of the local wildflowers.

The flowers used are grown naturally in Telangana and have medicinal properties.

2. Water Purification:

The flowers used, like Thangedi (Tanner’s Cassia) and Gunugu (Celosia), are said to possess qualities that purify water.

On the last day of the Bathukamma, when flower stacks are put into lakes and ponds, they become water purifiers as they provide the water with the necessary nutrients for the water ecosystem to thrive.

Spiritual Connection with Bathukamma

3. Worship of Nature: Generally, flowers are used to worship gods in different festivals, but in Bathukamma.

Flowers are considered Gods themselves as they are the manifestation of the Goddess. The conical stack stands for the holy mountains and the temple, a divine abode.

4. Female Energy: The event symbolises female energy and vitality. The originators and nurturers of life, women, create Bathukamma and perform rituals to ask the Goddess for abundance and a long life for their family.

The flowers are submerged to symbolise the Goddess returning to her origin and life cycle.
