Impetigo is a common bacterial skin condition, and it is highly contagious.

It is seen on the neck, face, and hands of children as well as infants.

However, by knowing how to get rid of impetigo in adults, you can overcome this skin disease.

Impetigo is caused by two types of bacteria: one is Staphylococcus aureus, and the other is Streptococcus pyogenes.

The treatment for impetigo depends on the type of bacteria that has resulted in impetigo.

How long is impetigo contagious?

As impetigo is a contagious disease, people who are suffering from impetigo must keep sores covered while going to school or public places.

Natural remedies for impetigo

The following are the Natural remedies for impetigo:

1. White Vinegar:

To treat impetigo, it is a must to keep the affected area clean, using either an antibiotic wash or water.

Prepare your antibiotic using white vinegar.

It helps in stopping the spread of infection and also dries the affected area.

  • Blend 1 tsp of white vinegar in 2 cups of lukewarm water
  • Use a cotton ball, and wash the infected skin
  • Pat the skin dry & apply an antibiotic ointment.
  • Cover the area with gauze.
  • Repeat this two or three times daily till the infection is cured.

                                                                     

2. Heat Therapy

Heat kills bacteria responsible for the infection.

Also, it helps in drying the sores & lesions caused by impetigo.

  • Soak a cloth in hot water and wring out the excess liquid.
  • Apply the warm washcloth to the affected area for a few minutes.
  • Repeat several times a day.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with 1 tsp of olive oil.

Apply this over the affected area and allow it to sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Repeat this twice or twice a day.

4. Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract acts as an antioxidant & has antibacterial properties.

Mix a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in water and apply it to the affected area using a cotton ball.

5. Garlic

Heat a few drops of sesame oil & fry 2 or 3 garlic cloves in it.

Cool & strain the oil and apply it on the affected area 2 to 3 times daily for a few days. 

How to prevent impetigo?

  • Wash your face twice a day. Once in the morning and once before going to bed.
  • Apply mild skin care products. It is suggested to use herbal products.
  • Don’t go out in the sun without wearing sunscreen lotion.
  • Never squeeze or pop any pimple.
  • Exfoliation is a must to remain away from red spots.
