These are the seven must-do activities to embrace the spirit of Diwali:

1. Deep Cleaning and Decorating: Deep-clean your house to eliminate negativity and let positivity in.

Decorate your doorstep with a vibrant rangoli (colourful patterns made with colored powders or flowers) and light up your house with lamps and flower garlands to give it a festive vibe.

2. Buying New Things: It is very auspicious to buy new things like clothes, utensils, and precious metals such as gold and silver on Dhanteras or the first day. It is a symbol to invite wealth and prosperity into your new year.

3. Lighting Diyas: Lighting of rows and rows of earthen oil lamps (diyas) and placing candles all over the house is the main attraction of Diwali.

The idea is to depict one light against the darkness, another knowledge against the ignorance, and the last one good against evil.

4. Doing Lakshmi Puja: On Diwali day, we worship Goddess Lakshmi, the bestower of wealth, and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Through this ritual, we pray for joy, achievement, and vigour.

5. Making and Sharing Sweets: Homemade traditional sweets (mithai) and savoury snacks are a must-have for Diwali.

It is the preparation of these treats and their distribution among family, friends, and neighbours that constitute a significant portion of the festivities.

6. Giving Gifts: Relationships based on love and care become stronger when you exchange heartfelt gifts. This instils the feeling of being part of a community and of unity.

7. Family Get-Togethers: Through this festival, families reunite for a whole day to spend quality time, wearing new traditional clothes, and eating festive meals together.
