Pitru Paksha is a 16-day holy period dedicated to paying respect to deceased ancestors.
It is a time period for thanking and requesting help from the souls who have left their bodies.
Pitrupaksha is a 16 day period dedicated to our ancestors, with offering puja and feeding food.
Start Date and End Date of Pitrupaksha :
The start date of Pitrupaksha is 8th September 2025, and the end date is 21st September 2025.

What to Do In Pitrupaksha?
1. Perform Sankalpa and Solidification
The two main rituals are Shraddha (offering food and prayers) and Tarpan (offering water and black sesame seeds).
They are performed on the specific lunar day (tithi) of the ancestor’s death for the release (mukthi) of their souls.
Ex: If someone passed away on Padyami thithi, we should offer a tarpan and do sradha ritual on that same thithi in this 15-day pitripaksha period, or else on any day we should offer.
2. Daan and Food Distribution
Food offerings to Brahmins, the needy, and animals such as cows, dogs, and crows are regarded as very pious acts.
People assume that such offerings honour the ancestors and bless the family.
3. Maintain a Disciplined Lifestyle In Pitrupaksha
Stick to a plain, sattvic life. Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and not indulging in unnecessary things.
Few people also abstain from cutting hair, shaving, and beginning new work during this time.
4. Prayer, Reading of Holy Books
Chant Pitru Gayatri Mantra and read sacred books like Bhagavad Gita or the Garuda Purana, which not only helps the souls of the ancestors but also the family of the reciters.

5. Not Doing Anything Lucky
Pitrupaksha duration is dedicated to mourning and remembrance of our ancestors. During this period, we avoid celebrations as weddings, housewarmings, or buying new things.
