Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, making it an auspicious time for a spiritual walk. Let’s walk through a detailed guide for a celebration with a spiritual theme.
Spiritual Practice and Mindset (What to Do):
✅ Introspection: Contemplate on the “Ravana” within – your negative traits, such as ego, anger, and greed. Promise to defeat one of them as if it were a victory of Rama/Durga.
✅ Silence/Meditation: Do silent contemplation, prayer, or meditation for a certain time, especially for this purpose, to feel your inner Divine Self (Shakti).
✅ Righteous Act: Create a new good habit or start a new good business (because the day is normally very auspicious, called Vijaya Muhurta).
✅ Charity (Daan): Involved in a variety of offerings like food, clothing, or necessities to those in need, which gives spiritual blessings.
5 Puja (Worship) to Perform On Dussehra:
1. Vijayadashami Puja:
Worship the Goddess Durga (Shakti) and Lord Rama for the qualities of strength, knowledge, and victory. Do a good-hearted aarti (light ceremony).
2. Ayudha Puja:
Worship the apparatus, tools, instruments, books, and vehicles used by you. It is a very spiritual gesture of reverence, recognising that your work and the instruments you use are the sacred means of your stay and growth on earth.
3. Saraswati Puja (Concluding Day):
Invoke Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge and wisdom, by keeping books and instruments at the Goddess to worship for the success on this day.
4. Shami Puja :
Shami Puja, performed on Dasara (Vijayadashami) is the worship of the Shami tree (Prosopis cineraria).
This ritual on Dussehra day represents the triumph of good over evil. The custom goes back to the Pandavas, who concealed their arms in the Shami tree while in exile and later got them back to win the war.
People exchange shami leaves as a symbol of gold, prosperity, and a blessing of victory and success in all new ventures.
