Irregular periods medically known as oligomenorrhea are quite common these days. Today every two out of five women suffer from this. Menstruation is caused when the lining of the uterus endometrial is shed.

These menstruation periods cycle varies from 28 to 35 days in females. Menstruation generally starts at the age of 10 or can differ in some cases and continues until the age of 45 or above. The stage when the period stop completely is known as menopause.

First of all, let us discuss what irregular periods are. The normal period cycle is 28 to 35 days. Any variation in this cycle such as the time between two consecutive period increases or period occurring more than once in a month or even excess bleeding in for continuous two months or more are called irregular periods. Missed or irregular periods are the result of the hormonal imbalances in a female body.

These hormonal imbalances can be caused by the following:

  • Eating disorder
  • Stress
  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Over-exercise
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Treatments such as chemotherapy
  • Certain medications and drugs
  • Smoking and alcohol
