Sambar recipe is a very delicious, aromatic dish popular in South India. It is well-known for the fact that it is made with little oil and lots of fresh veggies. It adds to the nutritional benefits of this speciality dish of the south. It is normally served with fresh steamed idlis or dosas.

Traditional sambar is great to be served along with other south Indian cuisine such as idlis and dosas. It is a nutritious and wholesome recipe packed with all the necessary ingredients that can keep you going all day.

It is usually eaten during breakfast and can be a very staple for the whole day. It can also be served along with hot steamed rice. Prepare healthy sambar at home with the help of this recipe.

Ingredients for Healthy Sambar Recipe:

  • ¾ Cup Toor ki dal
  • 3 drumsticks (cut to finger length)
  • 3 onions cut into half
  • 1 large tomato (chopped)
  • 1 to 2 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp. sambar powder
  • ½ tbsp. ginger garlic paste
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • Small tamarind ball
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. Freshly grated coconut

Method of Preparation of Healthy Sambar Recipe:

  1. Pressure cook the dal to smooth it out by adding 2 cups of water to it.
  2. Soak some tamarind in warm water to squeeze out the excess and filter the juice.
  3. Add 4 cups of water to a pot and add the chopped vegetables and cook till the drumsticks are halfway cooked.
  4. Add turmeric, red chilli powder, sambar powder, salt, and ginger-garlic paste. Keep cooking till the drumsticks are fully done.
  5. Add tamarind juice and coconut. Mash the dal to smooth it out or blend it to make it a puree. Simultaneously, you can use a colander to filter the dal. Add coriander leaves. Press the dal with a big spoon to drain the excess water and take the mixture.
  6. Mix it well and keep cooking until it comes to a boil. Now, add oil to a small pan; when the oil is hot, add mustard, cumin, and methi.
  7. When it starts to crackle, add red chilli powder, curry leaves, and garlic. Turn off the stove and now add hing. Pour this tempering over the sambar.
  8. If you want to refrigerate, do it once it is cooled down completely.
  9. Serve with rice and ghee
  10. You can also serve along with Dosa or Idli

NOTE :

 Adding ginger garlic paste is not recommended in traditional sambar, but it adds a great blend of aroma and flavour to it. sambar It is totally up to you. If you like its taste, add it; otherwise, don’t.
