Do you feel the need to urinate often in winters? Do not worry if you experience frequent urination in winter, as there are scientific reasons for this. Our body finds ways to maintain homeostasis i.e. a state where our temperate, pH, nutrition, etc. are stable.

Thus, when you are feeling warm, your body tries to cool itself, and when you are feeling cold, the body tries to keep itself warm. Thus, in cold temperatures, your body carries out certain processes to keep you warm and frequent urination is a result of these processes. This phenomenon is known as Cold diuresis.

Frequent Urination and Vasoconstriction

Our body is made up around 75 percent of water. Liquids freeze in cold temperatures. During such cold temperatures, a process called vasoconstriction is carried out in the body. In vasoconstriction, your blood vessels are constricted and blood flow to your skin in reduced. This process is essential, as heat from your skin gets lost to the environment.

Thus, by restricting the flow of blood to your fingers, toes and fingers, your body tries to prevent loss of heat from your body. As the blood vessels are constricted, they cause your blood pressure to rise, as less amount of space is available for the same amount of blood to flow. There is hormone known as the antidiuretic hormone that helps in decreasing the blood pressure as it rises.

It also signals the kidneys to pull out water from the blood and store it in the bladder. Then, kidneys filter out the excess of liquid from your blood to regulate the blood pressure and reduce the volume of blood. As your bladder fills up with excess fluid due to this process frequently, you experience the problem of frequent urination in winter.

Frequent Urination To Manage Cold Temperature Effect

As your body, tries to keep your vital internal organs warm in cold temperatures. You not only pee often but also experience sudden urge to pee. It is because, when you bladder is full of urine, heat loss may occur in the body. Thus the body feels the need to eliminate the urine, and that is when you have the urge to urinate.

Another reason for this is supposed to be the aquaporins. The aquaporins i.e. the proteins that facilitate transport of water through our cells are responsible for frequent urination. When you are exposed to cold weather, the aquaporins in the body are inhibited. They are not able to provide water to the body cells. Due to this, they leave the water in the blood. Thus, again the body tries to balance the pressure, pulls water from the blood, and stores them in the bladder.

Perspiration is another reason that could cause frequent urination. When you are hot, you become dehydrated by sweating. However, when you are cold, you do not lose moisture through perspiration. Thus, your body retains more water compared to when you are warm. Thus, your kidney pulls the water and stores it in the bladder from time to time, and thus you urinate more.

Wear warm clothes to lower frequent urination in winter

You can always lower your urination frequency during winter by covering your body from head to toe with warm clothes. Drinking hot water and eating warm food and including certain spices also keep your body warm.

So if you're experiencing frequent urination in winter, then there's no need to worry. All your body is trying to do is to keep your body warm through various processes.
