A Beginner’s Guide to Enhancing Your Meditation Practice with Crystals

I was practically raised among crystals. And I mean everywhere.

“I grew up in a family that owned a crystal factory for twenty years, so finding bins of quartz and amethyst around the house was just totally normal for me.

But here’s the strange thing: I didn’t even attempt to meditate till my late twenties.

I was running my own company, and it had left me totally burned out.

I was not sleeping well, was quite short-tempered, and a buddy eventually urged me to simply try and sit quietly for 10 minutes a day.

The first couple of efforts were a complete failure. Just sitting cross-legged on the floor had me working my way through my unending to-do lists.

I picked a random amethyst palm stone off my desk and everything changed. I did it only to humor my buddy, and keep my hands busy, but it provided me a tangible anchor.

“I had this cool, solid weight to hold onto instead of picking at my nails or reaching for my phone.

Seven years later, that basic physical practice is at the heart of my morning ritual. If you’re wondering about incorporating gemstones into your practice, here’s precisely what I wish I’d known back then.

Only One Stone (Seriously)?

Biggest beginner mistake? Buying a big, intimidating beginner kit. And honestly, you’ll spend the whole meditation time trying to decide which piece to hold.

Choose one. You can always add up the collection later.

Forget the intricate meaning charts for a while as well. It’s the feel of the stone that counts.

You want something smooth, with a reasonable weight to it, around the size of a £2 coin. Palm stones and tumbled bits work well for this.

3 Prominent Stones for Every Beginner:

These are the three stones I usually recommend for beginners:

  1. Amethyst: Where it all began. It is famed for quieting brain chatter, and the rich purple colour is pleasant to gaze at with half-open eyes. And excellent quality items are so simple to get by.
  2. Clear quartz: Think of this as the ultimate neutral. It doesn’t have any strong conventional connotations pushing you in a certain way; therefore, it’s a perfect blank canvas. And it’s quite reasonable, so you won’t break the bank buying one.
  3. Rose Quartz: Meditation might seem uncomfortable or stiff at first. Rose quartz is associated with self-compassion – just what you need when your brain won’t turn off on day three.

while you can’t hold them first while shopping online, follow your intuition. See what stone you keep clicking on to return to.

Because it’s important to view them in perspective, I’ve actually displayed the most frequent starting stones side by side at true size on my site.

Yes, that certainly is better than guessing from a written description

A 10-Minute Workout That Actually Works

Forget the luxurious floor cushions and the quiet retreat feel. I’ve successfully meditated in parked automobiles and bustling airport lounges.

This is the same regimen I recommend my friends to follow:

  • Set a brief timer: Turn your phone to aeroplane mode and set a timer for 10 minutes. Not too short to hate doing it and not too long to genuinely relax your thoughts.
  • How you want to sit: A typical desk chair is just good. Hold the crystal in your non-dominant hand, or simply keep it on your lap.
  • There are no hard and fast rules here.
  • Contact the stone: Take three deep breaths. Feel the weight of the stone, how smooth it is. Notice how it heats up against your skin gently.

This isn’t some mysterious technique. It just provides your busy mind a tangible thing        to land on.

  • Count to 10: Count your breaths, from one to ten, and repeat. Your thoughts will drift.
  • I managed to breathe three times before thinking about crafting a business email in my first round.
  • When you see you’ve wandered, give the stone a little squeeze. Use that physical pressure as a reset button and start again at one, instead of feeling irritated with yourself.
  • The last minute: Put the stone down for the final 60 seconds. Feel the strange, mild sensation or warmth in your empty hand. Sit with the emotion till the alarm goes off.

Face it, week one is likely to seem a little meaningless. Your back will undoubtedly hurt, and you may question whether the stone is doing anything at all. That is very natural. But two weeks, ten minutes a day, will educate you much more than any blog article ever could.

Keeping Your Crystal Clean

Whether you believe in the metaphysical concept of wiping off “absorbed energy” or not, cleansing is a nice little ritual. You maintain in contact with the thing you are holding. This is how I really do it, beginning with the simplest of all:

  • Moonlight: Leave the stone on a windowsill overnight. This is my preferred way, since it requires virtually zero work. But if you keep amethyst in direct sunshine for days on end, the UV rays will fade the purple.
  • A plate of selenite: Selenite is a classic self-cleansing stone that acts as a recharger for other stones. I have a little slab on my bedside table. Every Sunday night I will lay my pieces out on it while I sort out my weekly planner. Five seconds. That’s all.
  • Running water: Hold the crystal under a cold tap for 30 seconds, then dry it off. Fast and efficient.
  • One warning: don’t do this with soft stones such as selenite; they may pit or dissolve in water. Amethyst and quartz are quite acceptable, however.
  • Smoke: Pass the stone through the smoke of incense, sage or palo santo. I use it after a stone has been passed around a lot, as after a busy day at a market booth.

Your unique meditation stone only has to be used once a month. Just wash it occasionally with a soft, dry cloth, and don’t keep it near your keys, since quartz scratches quickly.

What Crystals Can’t Do?

To be very honest with you, A crystal isn’t going to cure your burnout or replace a good night’s sleep or be a replacement for treatment. If anybody tells you differently, they’re only trying to sell you something.

It can accomplish much less, but really so much more useful. It keeps your hands occupied.

It offers your dispersed ideas a concrete home base to come back to. A stone makes fidgeting for 10 minutes a real daily routine.

And rituals are the things that get you through the days you really want to skip. The meditation performs the heavy work. The crystal is only there to keep you company while you work it.

Ten minutes, start with one stone. No pressure, no special gear. And that’s pretty much all you need.
