Last week, my science teacher talked about water in our bodies, and after that I started looking at my grandmother and grandfather in a new way. They are old now.

My grandfather is 74, and my grandmother is 71. I noticed they don’t drink water as much as my little brother and me.

So I wanted to write about hydration and healthy ageing, because I think it matters a lot for families like mine.

What is hydration anyway?

Hydration is just a big word for having enough water inside your body. My teacher said our body is mostly filled with water, which surprised me.

The National Institute on Ageing and Mayo Clinic say water is about 60 per cent of an adult body.

That is more than half of a person! When we drink enough, we are hydrated, and when we don’t, we become dehydrated, and that is when the small problems start.

Water is in our blood and our skin and even in our brain. I did not know the brain had water in it. That part was really cool.

Why the body needs water so much

Water does a lot of jobs. It carries food and oxygen to different parts of the body through the blood.

It helps us make spit and helps the stomach break down food, which is digestion.

It also keeps us cool, because when we sweat, the sweat takes the heat away from the skin. That is why in summer everyone feels thirstier.

My grandmother says water also helps the body remove waste when we go to the toilet.

Without enough water, everything becomes slow and heavy inside. So water is like a helper that never takes a break.

But why do older people forget to drink water?

This is the part that confused me the most. My grandfather can sit and watch television for a long time and not drink a single sip.

I asked my mother, and she said that as people get older, their bodies do not feel thirsty as fast as before.

The National Institute on Ageing explains that the thirst signal becomes weaker with age, so an older person may already need water but simply not feel it.

Also, some older people take medicines, and my mother said certain medicines make the body lose more water.

And sometimes they don’t want to drink much because getting up again and again is tiring.

So the ageing and hydration needs of my grandparents are a bit different from a kid like me.

How it makes them feel when they don’t drink

One hot afternoon, my grandmother did not drink enough, and she felt very tired and a little dizzy.

Dehydration can do that because when there is less water, the blood has to work harder and the body feels weak.

It also affects the brain. My teacher said even a small amount of dehydration can make it hard to concentrate.

I definitely noticed my grandfather becomes forgetful and a bit cranky when he is thirsty; maybe that is connected.

Less water can slow down digestion too, so people feel bloated or their stomach does not move properly. And even walking gets harder, because the muscles and joints also need water to move nicely.

Small signs I started watching for

My mother told me to notice a few simple signs, so now I keep an eye out. The ones she showed me are:

  • Dry lips and a dry mouth
  • Feeling tired, dizzy or confused
  • Dark yellow urine
  • A headache that came from nowhere

If an older person has these, they might need more fluids. But I also learned something important.

People with kidney, heart or other medical conditions should not just start drinking a lot on their own.

They have to follow their doctor’s advice, because for them too much water can also be a problem. My mother was very serious about this part.

Little things my family does

Helping is actually easy. We keep a water bottle near my grandfather’s chair so he can see it and remember.

My grandmother likes warm water, and sometimes soup, so we give her that instead. Water does not only come from a glass.

It also comes from fruits like watermelon and oranges, and from dal and buttermilk at meals.

I have kind of become the water reminder of the house. Every time I drink something, I tell my grandparents to also take a sip.

When we go for a walk in the evening,

I carry one extra bottle for them that has features to add more alkaline into water. These tiny habits are simple hydration vitality tips that anybody in a family can do.

One thing I really remember is that the amount of water is not the same for everybody.

It changes with the weather, how much a person walks, their medicines and their health. So there is no one magic number, which I found interesting.

Why it matters as they grow older

When my grandparents drink enough, they seem more active and comfortable.

They walk a bit more, they talk more, and they smile more. Good water intake for seniors is not about living forever; water cannot do magic like that.

Some people even talk about hydration for longevity, but my teacher was honest and said water by itself does not make anyone live longer. It only helps the body work the way it is supposed to.

I liked that she told the truth instead of making water sound like a superpower. That is also why hydration and healthy ageing go together, not because water is magic, but because a tired body cannot do its normal jobs well.

My last thought

I don’t know everything about this. I am only ten, and I still forget my own water when I am busy with cartoons.

But I feel that a glass of water is such a small thing that can help the people I love the most. Tonight I am going to fill my grandmother’s bottle before she even asks. Maybe that is my little job now.
