What Are The Five Main Factors Affecting Fertility

When people think about fertility, they often look ahead, focusing on plans, timelines, and future decisions.

But many overlook how their daily habits affect fertility. Things like sleep, meal times, and daily stress all play a role.

In fact, reproductive hormones respond to these routines, even before you start thinking about trying to conceive.

Chronic stress is a great example of what is considered with day-to-day activities. Chronic stress causes rationing-like behaviour in the body.

This results in energy being diverted from reproduction to processes that are critical for day-to-day survival.

This stress is not expected to disappear. What is more important is preventing the buildup of stress.

Simple tasks like standing away from your desk and taking short walks between meetings and work throughout the day can have a significant impact.

Cutting out or limiting certain foods in your diet can positively impact your fertility. Restricting meals and consuming foods high in sugar and caffeine can cause spikes in insulin.

What are the five main factors affecting fertility in both women and men:

1. Age
Fertility generally declines from the age of 35 years in women

2. Ovulation &  health issues
Irregular or absent ovulation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid disorders, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, and other reproductive conditions can reduce the chance of conception.

3. Sperm health
Low sperm count, poor sperm movement (motility), or abnormal sperm shape can contribute to difficulty conceiving.

4. Body Weight – lifestyle – Diet
Being significantly overweight or underweight, smoking, excessive alcohol, recreational drugs, regularly eating junk food will affect fertility, and poor diet also can cause fertility issues in men and women, and physical inactivity can negatively affect fertility.

5. Medical & environmental factors 🌍
Certain infections, medications, chronic illnesses, exposure to some chemicals/pesticides/metals, and high levels of stress may affect reproductive health.

How to overcome stress within 15 minutes?

You can overcome stress with a brisk walk, breathing Pranayama, Anulom Vilom, reading a book, listening to smooth music, and playing games. If you practice any one from this also can shows the positive results.

Fertility Depends On Age + Ovulation + Sperm Health + Diet + Physical activity  Medical/Environmental Factors + Health Issues + Body weight

If a couple has been trying to conceive for 12 months (under 35) or 6 months (35 or older) without success, fertility evaluation is generally recommended; evaluation may be appropriate sooner when there are known risk factors.

Androgens in women can increase, which can disturb the ovulation process, and in men, the quality of their sperm and testosterone can decrease.

Maintaining hydration and eating regular meals that contain protein and fibre  rich foods can have a more positive impact on fertility and overall health rather than trying the latest fad diet.

Multiple body systems are coordinated by sleep. The reproductive system and brain work almost hand in hand while we sleep at night.

Sleep deprivation disrupts critical hormonal cycles. It can be more beneficial for hormonal control to have a consistent wake time and get morning sun than to add more sleep to your schedule.

Sleep is important, but so is physical activity. The role of exercise in fertility is more complicated.

Insulin sensitivity and hormonal equilibrium are good for ovulation and sperm production, both of which sleep and adequate exercise can support.

Too much exercise can cause sleep deprivation, which in turn can lower those hormones.

Schedules where you exercise more consistently, albeit less strenuously, can be more beneficial than more vigorous workouts that are inconsistent.

These habits cannot promise specific results and are not a substitute for personal medical advice.

Still, they help you see fertility as part of your overall health. The same daily habits that support your heart, metabolism, and brain also play a big role in fertility.

At Eraya Fertility, we use this approach to help our patients, even before any treatment begins.

“We often meet people who assume fertility is something that either works or does not, on its own timeline,” says Dr Nupur.

“What we try to show them is that it functions more like an ongoing conversation with the body, one that has been taking place for years, whether or not they were paying attention to it.

The encouraging part is that this conversation can still be redirected.”

You usually do not need to change your whole lifestyle to make progress. Paying steady attention to sleep, nutrition, stress, and physical activity over time helps your body adjust.

In daily life, this means building habits like waking up at the same time, eating regular meals, taking short breaks from stress, and picking types of movement you can keep up with.

On their own, these changes may seem small. The real benefit comes from repeating them until they become your normal routine, not just a quick fix.

This is our main goal at Eraya Fertility: to help you build daily habits that support your body long before conception is a concern.
